Metalizing is the process of spraying molten alloys, usually in the form of wires, onto a sandblasted surface. The atomized alloys use the sacrificial nature of galvanic protection to sacrifice themselves to the corrosion process and leave the underlying steel unaltered.

Metalizing is the most cost effective way to protect steel bridges and steel components located in corrosion prone areas. It is a proven system that has been in use for more than 100 years.


		Why is it not more utilized by owners and engineers? The old system of metalizing field structures utilizing flame-applied equipment was slow and expensive. However, new technologies utilizing high-deposition electric arc spray equipment have much higher production rates, similar to those of paint spraying, helping to make metalizing competitive with high performance paints.

Owners and engineers who recognize the life cycle savings offered by metalizing will specify its use rather than painting and repainting. A steel structure protected by metalizing will last upwards of 30 years, whereas a typical painted steel structure will need extensive blasting and repainting every 10 to 15 years. The upfront cost is higher, but the amortized cost per year is much less.
